I am thrilled to be launching the first pattern in my new Chinoiserie Collection: The Gardenia Print. The soothing nature scene is captured in soft tonal colors that beckon you to breathe easy and feel your best.
Chinoiserie, a Western style of art inspired by Chinese motifs and techniques, was very popular in European art, furniture, and fabrics during the 17th and 18th centuries. The style was especially celebrated on exquisitely detailed wallpapers, displayed with pride in countless French and English estates and country homes.
When I was growing up, my mother had most of the rooms in our house covered with beautiful wallpaper. My great grandmother loved wallpapers by the famous interior designer Nancy McClelland, and had every wall of her Brick House on Shelburne Farms papered with unique American prints. Those memories, woven with my own inspiration, helped create what you see today.
My Gardenia Print has been meticulously drawn and painted by hand in the Chinoiserie tradition. The gardenia flower is a personal favorite of mine. I love its soft white petals, and the fragrance instantly transports me to happiness! Using a classic Chinoiserie scene, I set the blossoms among birds both large and small to invoke depth and tranquility.
Chinoiserie has always represented to me a sophisticated look infused with a vibrant, welcoming energy. I have tried to capture this feeling on fabric. My goal was to create a print that could transform any ordinary moment – morning or evening – into an elegant affair. You deserve to be wrapped in beauty before a busy day unfolds, and while it’s winding to an end.
