As soon as I began designing floral prints, I knew that hydrangeas would be one of my first patterns. Growing up on the North Shore of Long Island, hydrangeas were always in the background of childhood summers. It wasn’t until I would later find them mid-bloom at my husband's home in the Hamptons, did I really understand the beauty of these flowers. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI met my husband in high school and began visiting him in East Hampton each summer after we met. His family lived in a rambling shingled house surrounded by elm trees, privet hedges, and beautiful blue hydrangeas. My mother-in-law had terrific style; she adored blue hydrangeas and had them planted throughout the backyard. Something about them struck me and stayed with me long after my visit. There’s something magical about the blue flowers of hydrangeas framed by the vibrant green grass of summer. This scene and its palette of colors are forever etched in my memory. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHydrangeas’ soft shape is perfectly suited for the Indian block print process. The bulging flowers in white and blue can be carved into wood blocks and pressed on cotton by hand. The setting is elegant, warm and comfortable. I am at the table with friends talking while waiting to be served.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs I take in the scene with all my senses a vision for a new pattern emerged in my mind’s eye. The bone china’s Filigree elements combine with the room’s wallpaper, melting slowly into an idea…I can barely see it but there it is...\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe dream skips backward, I’m now in the kitchen with the hostess. It’s the morning before the dinner party.. She is wearing a beautiful bathrobe with the pattern I had imagined. I could see the pattern's outline but not clearly. It was red with delicate lines. But the harder I tried to see the print the more it faded…..\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eUpon awakening I race down to my office to sketch as much of the design as possible. I don’t consider the cherry blossom a flower in the same sense as the hydrangea or the lily of the valley, yet it is a flower that makes my heart race when I see it. Last spring (which means February in California) I was driving along a beautiful country road lined with blooming cherry trees. The sight was spectacular. It was at that moment I decided to create a print that might make customers feel the same way when they wore it. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe cherry blossom print is one of my seasonal prints offered beginning in late february and then going away a short time later as the days warm up and the nights get longer. I worked long and hard to strike a balance of colors that were flattering and true to life. At first I experimented with a very impressionist version of the flowers, but in the end I decided on a style that clearly looked like cherry blossoms.
